Christian Funerals refer to the ceremonies of the Church that accompany death. These ceremonies primarily take place to pray for the deceased and to accompany them as they undergo their final journey from this life to the next. They are marked with hope in the midst of grief, due to our belief in the resurrection of Christ which we will participate in.

"The Church who, as Mother, has borne the Christian sacramentally in her womb during his earthly pilgrimage, accompanies him at his journey's end, in order to surrender him 'into the Father's hands.' She offers to the Father, in Christ, the child of his grace, and she commites to the earth, in hope, the seed of the body that will rise in glory. This offering is fully celebrated in the Eucharistic sacrifice; the blessing before and after Mass are sacramentals."

-Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) 1683

  • Planning a Funeral and Other Rites

    • Planning for Christian Burial

Many planning steps are coordinated between a funeral home and the Church. You can also reach out to our Collaborative Pastoral Center to help make arrangements. Our Funeral Planning Handbook provides information to help you make decisions while planning the actual funeral Mass.
Beyond the actual funeral Mass or service, prayers are often offered at a Vigil either during a wake at a funeral home or in another location, as well as at the time of burial.
Please reach out to our Collaborative Pastoral Center with any questions and to begin the process or to speak with a priest.
